LIVE NOW! The Invitational Week 3: Send Us the Bill
Join new Congress members’ names in our biennial ‘joint legislation’ contest -- plus winning obit poems for the exes of 2022
The Traficant-DeLay-Akaka Roadside Port-A-Pot Act (1993)
The Moore-Greene-Salazar-Good Act mandates fresh leafy veggies to school lunch programs. (2021)
The Johnson-Sevier-Lee-Lee-King bill to establish the key rule for ending a filibuster. (2013)
Here’s one way to make Congress do something — even if it’s in name only. It’s one of The Invitational’s first and most popular contests, a game that’s been played among congressional staffers forever: Combine two or more names from our (well, Wikipedia’s) list of the new members of the 118th Congress to “co-sponsor” a bill based on their combined last names, as in the classic Style Invitational examples above. Not getting them? Say them out loud. It’s an addictively fun game — entry deadline is Friday, Jan. 27. And you could win the handsomely reptilian socks pictured below!
And we have a couple dozen inking entries in our annual obit-poem contest, wittily (and yeah, irreverently) commemorating such luminaries as Pelé and Sidney Poitier, such deserving but less celebrated folks as the founder of the Church of Satan, and the mastermind of Sports Illustrated’s swimsuit issue; and such lesser lights as the guy who decided it’d be a fun idea to put a firecracker on his head.
See it all now at The Gene Pool, the Substack site of collaborator Gene Weingarten (along with chat on various Gene-ric topics.
