Live now: Week 10 of The Invitational
Celebrating our 30th birthday by reprising our contests from 1993
We might have moved out of the house into cozier quarters, but, dang it, The Invitational turns 30 this week with an invitation (but of course!) to enter your choice of contests from our debut year — everything from neologisms to cartoon captions to headline spoofs to limericks to “joint legislation.” And they’ll all be easy to access with no paywall.
Deadline for Week 10 is Saturday, March 18, 4 p.m. Eastern.
And we have a passel of winners for a favorite genre for Czar Gene Weingarten: jokes in the form of rhyming poems — or pokes. Everything from a sonnet on the chicken crossing the road to, ahem, some subject matter that wouldn’t have appeared in a certain metropolitan newspaper. It’s all online — along with Gene’s usual Q&A and readers’ own banter — now at The Gene Pool, live for questions till 2 p.m. Eastern time, readable forever.
Dive into the Pool HERE.
Speaking of paywall: This week is the last week you can enter The Invitational without being a paid Gene Pool subscriber. Sign up over there — not here — for just $50 a year and you’ll be able to Invite and participate in Gene’s twice-weekly chats.
Also: After next week, I’m going to stop sending out this newsletter for now — but please don’t unsubscribe: Right now, I’m using it just to send y’all over to The Gene Pool, and if you’re interested enough, you’re likely getting its own email with the same links. But as long as you stay on this free subscription, I’ll be able to get hold of you with any special material that might arise — or, if something happens at the Pool, I set up The Invitational right here.
And still running — deadline Saturday at 4 p.m. Eastern time: our contest to use all the letters in a movie title — as many times as you like — to make a different movie title. See Week 9 here.
